The first full year results from our new recycling and refuse service are in and show that people have been rethinking their rubbish and recycling more than ever before. Thank you.

• recycling rose by 17%
• we collected over 21,500 tonnes of recycling
• the rubbish sent to landfill was cut by over 5,000 tonnes, saving Surrey taxpayers landfill tax.

Higher than the national average

And you are now recycling 55% of your rubbish – far more than the national average.

We are making 145,000 recycling and refuse collections every week, compared with 100,000 before the new service. 

Membership of the garden waste service is up too with over 6,000 tonnes now composted as a result.

It's quite some achievement. So well done for thinking about re-using, then recycling and only then binning it as a last option.  

Star for a Night 2014 and free professional tuition

It’s back, bigger than ever! We’re looking for local teenagers to take part in the borough’s famous talent show - Star for a Night. And what’s more - we’ll help you prepare, with free tuition for everyone passing the auditions.

Natalie,15, from Horley took part in Star for a Night 2013 and here’s what she had to say:

“If you like singing, dancing or acting, Star for a Night is great fun. There’s plenty of chance to practice, perform in professional places and have a great time. I also met loads of people who have the same interests as me. I’d recommend it to anyone.”  

So if you want to sing, dance or act and want the chance to audition, rehearse and perform in Star for a Night 2014 you need to:

• Live or go to school in the borough
• Be aged between 11 and 18
• Be available for audition, rehearsal and show dates.

• Auditions are on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 January 2014 at the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill.

And if you’re shy don’t worry - the auditions are really relaxed and you can do them as part of a group or solo – it’s your choice.

What’s involved?

After the auditions you take part in five weeks of rehearsals at the Warwick School, Redhill and receive free professional tuition in your chosen field. Every participant has the chance to win a year scholarship to So You Wanna Be performing arts school plus a year-long scholarship to Urban Play Street Dance classes.

The big performance takes place over two nights -Thursday 10 and Friday 11 April 2014, 7.30pm at The Harlequin Theatre.

In May, residents will go to the polls to vote for Members of the European Parliament as well as for their local councillors.

Registration forms were sent in October to over 58,000 borough households who are eligible to vote but 8,500 are yet to respond. By law the council must visit each household that has failed to return its form, which increases the council’s costs. Canvassers have begun their visits to homes that are yet to register.

Young voters

Your form should include everyone in your household who will be eligible to vote, including those aged 16 and 17.

If your details haven't changed you can confirm this online or by telephone using our free phone number 0800 197 9870 (you will need the security code on the registration form). Alternatively, make any changes you need to the form and return it by post.

Cut down junk mail

You can opt to have your details excluded from the edited register. This will mean your details cannot be bought by individuals and commercial organisations. You can also do this as part of your online or telephone confirmation or on your electoral registration form.

A revised register will be published on 17 February 2014.
