Section title 2
Illegal tobacco – a drag on our communities

What should you do if you spot them?

Illegal tobacco is becoming a national problem. Criminal gangs target vulnerable people by selling cigarettes and hand rolled tobacco at reduced prices. Illicit tobacco has been found across the county by Surrey County Council Trading Standards.

The cigarettes are likely to be sold at small shops, street sellers, car boots sales, ice cream values or at places of work. If cigarettes are being offered cheaply, chances are they are illegal.

Fight for a clean community

Smoking illegal tobacco increases the risks to your health. These illegal products are uncontrolled and can contain very high levels of tar, nicotine, lead and many other dangerous chemicals and contaminants. In some cases they have been found to contain rat droppings or even asbestos.

Fight to make sure your community is safe and clean.

Don’t turn a blind eye

Surrey Crimestoppers is asking residents to report any sightings or suspicions they may have by using their safe, secure and annoymous phone line: 0800 555 111. Visit Surrey Crimestoppers for more information about the campaign.

It’s quick and easy to complete the form and send it back to us. You can:

Section title 1
Promoting healthy relationships

The definition of domestic abuse now includes 16-18 year olds - find out what we're doing during Domestic Abuse Awareness Week to make sure young people are equipped with the right knowledge to prevent unhealthy relationships.

Surrey Domestic Abuse (DA) Awareness Week takes place from 14 to the 19 of October.

A changing definition

Last year, the definition of domestic abuse expanded to include “patterns of threatening behaviour towards people aged 16 years and over”. This year, during Domestic Abuse Awareness Week (14-19 October), we’ll be working with outreach services to promote the support available to 16-18 year olds as well as all residents to encourage healthy relationships.

Increasing awareness

The 2011-12 British Crime Survey found that the 16-19 age group was more likely to suffer partner abuse than any other age group. We’re working with our outreach services to make sure young people have access to the information that will help them recognise domestic abuse.

During the week, there’ll be information on the Surrey Against Domestic Abuse website and drop in sessions in libraries to promote awareness of healthy relationships and the support that's available.

East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services, which covers the borough, will be at the following sessions:

  • Caterham Valley Library, Tuesday 15 October 12 noon-2pm
  • Redhill Library, Thursday 17 October 12 noon-3pm
  • Dorking Library, Friday 18 October 12 noon-3pm

Information and support

There’s lots of places to go if you need support or want more information about domestic abuse.

  • Visit East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services website - a local charity which provides a range of services offering emotional and practical support to people and their children who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse as well as to professionals working with people affected by domestic abuse. They can also be contacted on 01737 771350 between 9am and 4pm.
  • Call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you have information about a crime and don't want to leave your name or visit the Crimestoppers website to report online.
  • Call Surrey Police on 101 - however in an emergency always dial 999. Visit the Surrey police website to report online.

From 30 September – 6 October 2013, there will be activities across the borough to celebrate Ageing Well week.

Ageing Well week

To celebrate National Older Peoples Day on 1 October 2013, we’ve gone one step further and created a week long programme of activities for older residents.

Our leisure and community centres have come on board so we’re able to offer activities and classes to grab everyone’s interest. Line dancing, bingo, yoga, pilates, baking, swimming, computer sessions…the list is endless.

Come along whether you’re in a group or on your own

The week is being run by our Ageing Well Coordinator, Helen Dredge: “Everyone is welcome – whether you’re on your own or want to come along and watch before getting involved. There’s so much happening all over the borough. There’ll be things to do in Reigate, Banstead, Horley and Redhill so wherever you live, there’ll be an activity for you.

“The activities and sessions are meant to give people a taste of what’s on offer. Should you be inspired by your chosen class then you can speak to the instructor and find out how to continue after the week has finished.”

A packed programme of activities

There will be a special day of activities on Tuesday 1 October in Priory Park to mark Older Peoples Day, which coincides with the UN International Day of Older Persons. Between 10am and 2pm the park will be packed with representatives from sports clubs and local community groups. Instructors will be available to talk to participants about the activities on offer.

For the full programme detailing activities and timings day by day, please download the booklet from our website.
