A dog has been found dumped and abandoned in the street in Chipstead with her fur missing.

Heartbreaking graphic photos show the female dog, thought to be a poodle or similar, with horrific damage to her white fur, exposing bright pink skin underneath.

In one particular image, the helpless animal can be seen cowering down into herself while sat on a blanket in the vehicle that rescued her. The top of her head is almost entirely bald, with only tufts remaining on her scalp and around her eyes.

She was found in High Road by a resident on Friday (August 16) before being collected by a Reigate and Banstead Borough Council (RBBC) dog warden on the same day.

According to the council, it is not clear what happened to the dog, thought to be three or four years old, nor is her owner currently known as her microchip is foreign registered.

Ben Murray, licensing and regulation manager at RBBC, said: "We have been in contact with the RSPCA as the dog is microchipped, however, the chip is a foreign registered one and without an owner they are unable to help. Unfortunately this hinders our investigation, hence why we have taken to social media to gain as much information as we possibly can.

"With regards to the injuries, the dog is currently undergoing treatment and tests to ascertain what it’s suffering from with a local vet. It will be cared for locally as treatment continues."

A social media post from the council has received huge coverage, with more than 1,000 shares and 400 comments, many of those expressing upset and anger.

Lynn Duffy wrote: "How can humans treat animals like this. Hope this dog makes a wonderful recovery and gets her forever home and spoilt rotten."

Another, Elaine Fry, said: "Poor baby! How could anyone be so cruel! The dog must be so sore and so lonely and unloved! It breaks my heart! I hope it gets looked after properly by the vet and finds its forever loving home! Humans can be so cruel."

Some also offered to take the dog and re-home her.

In a statement, the council said it was grateful for the well wishes and vowed to keep people updated on the dog's recovery.
