Reigate and Banstead Borough Council is working with business savings and support experts Place Support Partnership (PSP) to deliver a business cost reduction project to micro and SME businesses across the borough. This will include advice and training on how to achieve the best value for your money on essential services like electricity, gas, telecoms, merchant fees, insurance and water.

Maintaining a strong local economy is vital for our borough, both in terms of employment and wealth generation. As part of our work to develop our emerging Local Plan, we are preparing an Economic Needs Assessment to understand how our local economy, employment and economic links to the wider area are changing. It will help to identify the type and amount of commercial floorspace needed through to 2043, as well as employment supply and demand. If you run a business in the borough, please take part in our business survey to inform this important research.

The Government is changing the way local services are delivered. This will see the replacement of Surrey County Council and borough/district councils with a smaller number of new unitary councils. We want to ensure that Government approves a unitary model in Surrey that serves our residents and businesses best. For this, we need your help. Please complete our Future of Your Council survey.  Survey will close at 12pm on 21 April. We are also supporting broader engagement activity across the Surrey districts and boroughs and encourage you to also complete the Shaping Surrey’s Future Survey (open until Sunday 20 April). While Reigate & Banstead Councillors across all political parties have agreed a preference for a three unitary council model in Surrey, we want to ensure the final proposal explains what is important to local residents. In tandem, we continue to pursue collaboration with Crawley Borough Council.

Are you looking to grow your business? Surrey County Council have recently launched a new Economic Growth Fund which includes Business Growth Grant funding.

Business Growth Grants will support companies of all sizes to scale up and create jobs. The Fund will provide match funding of between £10k-£50k to 50% of project costs.

The grant can be used for activities that support business growth such as new equipment, product development and training and is open to micro, small, and medium enterprises in Surrey.

Applications for round one are now open and due to close at the end of May 2025. Further rounds may follow this year. 

To apply, you’ll need to demonstrate how your bid delivers against the three priorities in Surrey's Economic Strategy: workforce and skills; business growth; and economic infrastructure.

There’s a two-step process for all three areas, starting with an expression of interest.

Centrica is offering funding of up to £100,000 for innovative and sustainable energy projects in Surrey through its Energy for Tomorrow fund. Social enterprises, organisations, charities and non-profits across the South East of England can apply for grants of up to £100,000. Applications are now open until 17 April.

Made Smarter is a UK Government programme helping manufacturing SMEs, makers and creators embrace the digital technologies that will help to grow their business. Registration is now open to access fully funded expert advice, leadership training, student interns and up to £20,000 in technology grants.

The programme is open to manufacturing and engineering SMEs with 250 employees or fewer and an annual turnover of £50 million or less, who are looking to overcome common challenges like productivity, decarbonisation and competition through the adoption of digital technologies.

From 31 March 2025, businesses with more than 10 employees will be required to separate out materials for recycling and have a dedicated separate food waste collection. Categories of waste that must be separated include:

• dry recyclable materials - plastic, metal, glass, paper and card
• food waste 
• black bin waste (residual waste)  

Workplaces that generate garden waste have a legal duty to recycle or compost if it delivers the best environmental outcome.  

Workplaces can decide on the size of containers and frequency of collections based on the volume of waste they produce. You do not need to provide bins for your customers, however, if you provide bins, you will need to separate dry recyclable waste, food waste and black bin waste. 

The Remanufacturing Catalyst for the South East was set up to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of manufacturing processes.  It aims to help businesses move towards net zero and embrace a circular economy through remanufacturing and value retention processes.

Based at the University of Brighton, the catalyst is part of a multimillion-pound research project involving six universities, industry partners, local authorities, and high-value catapults such as the Manufacturing Technology Centre.

Launched in 2024, it is using AI and intelligent automation to create a new manufacturing ecosystem that promotes cost-effective circular resource use and drives sustainable innovation.
