Don’t let drink sneak up on you

A couple of glasses at home, a few after work … After a long day many of us like to unwind with a nice glass of something. But it’s funny how drink can sneak up on us. And this doesn’t help our organs, giving our body a hard time. Regularly drinking over the guidelines (Change4Life) can lead to serious health problems, from liver damage to a greater risk of getting cancer or having a heart attack.

A couple of glasses at home, a few after work … After a long day many of us like to unwind with a nice glass of something. But it’s
funny how drink can sneak up on us. And this doesn’t help our organs, giving our body a hard time. Regularly drinking over the guidelines (Change4Life) can lead to serious health problems, from liver damage to a greater risk of getting cancer or having a heart attack.

Benefits

The good news is that cutting down doesn’t have to mean giving up. All you need do is stick within the guidelines – one for women and another for men. You’ll probably notice the benefits* quite quickly including:

  • feeling better in the mornings and feeling in better shape generally
  • having more energy and feeling less tired in the day
  • better looking skin
  • losing a few pounds or not gaining weight.

Checking out how much you drink

Start by jotting down what you drank over the last week. Then see if you are drinking over the lower-risk guidelines. You can check online on the Change4Life website.

And there’s now a handy app for smartphone users to help you track what you drink.

Start to cut back

If you’re above the guidelines, why not start to cut back straight away? Swap your usual for:

  • a smaller drink
  • a lower-strength drink
  • a drink with a mixer
  • a soft drink or glass of water
  • a drink later than usual
  • a drink with a meal only
  • a cup of tea or coffee.

And why not have alcohol-free days sometimes.

Other ways to wind down

If you drink to unwind, try finding other ways to relax:

  • pamper yourself with a bath
  • sip a cup of herbal tea
  • rediscover your music collection
  • catch up with a friend over the phone
  • walk the dog
  • start a new hobby
  • go for a run, walk or swim
  • join a club or gym.

Or use the money you’ve saved from drinking less to treat yourself – a trip to the cinema, a day out, a nice meal…

Drinking less now can make a big difference to your health later on. So don’t let drink sneak up on you - catch it out and cut it back.

* If you do have physical withdrawal symptoms take medical advice before stopping completely as it can be dangerous to do this too quickly without proper advice and support.

A bad smell in Redhill

Residents have been in touch about the unpleasant smell from Biffa’s Redhill landfill site. Particularly noticeable since January, the odour has prompted the Environment Agency (the EA - responsible for inspecting and monitoring the site) to investigate.

Residents have been in touch about the unpleasant smell from Biffa’s Redhill landfill site. Particularly noticeable since January, the odour has prompted the Environment Agency (the EA - responsible for inspecting and monitoring the site) to investigate.

Biffa has been asked to come up with a site management improvement action plan with deadlines they must meet. The EA is monitoring Biffa’s progress with regular site improvements. And it is monitoring odours in the wider Redhill area when it receives complaints.

So if you notice a bad smell in the area please let the (EA) know by calling its Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60 (free of charge, 24 hours a day).

Visit the EA’s web site if you’re interested in knowing more about:

  • why the landfill smells
  • why it became worse in January
  • what’s being done about it
  • and how the site is regulated.

Biffa also provides more general information on its Redhill landfill site on its website.

£5,000 is up for grabs for budding businessmen and women taking part in this year's Entrepreneur Academy. But you need to apply to take part by Monday 10 March.

Organised by the Council and run by East Surrey College, the Academy aims to give entrepreneurs a boost in getting their businesses off the ground with expert advice, training and information sharing.

Over six monthly sessions, participants will cover business planning, finance, legal advice, marketing and online business promotion.

Practical business support

As well as trainer-led learning, local business people share their experiences and business mentors are on hand to give you advice and guidance through the early stages of running your businesses.

At the end of the programme, you will have the chance to pitch for £5,000 to help get your business off to a flying start.

Start your business with the right information

Hayley Fraser and Natalie Dugdale founders of a smoothie and juice pot bar, Froosion, took part in last year's Academy and successfully pitched for half the £5,000 funding. "The Entrepreneur Academy has been fantastic in taking us through the key aspects of starting our own business," said Natalie. "Without it we could have started a business without knowing the most important things to help us succeed.”

Join the Academy

There are just 12 places available on the programme, which is open to anyone with a new business idea who lives in the borough and is over 18.

To apply, or find out more about how the council helps local businesses, visit our business support page, fill out the application form.

Rethnk your rubbish recyle more
Our new recycling service has proved a huge hit with 8 out of 10 residents using it. We’re always looking for ways to encourage people to recycle more so we’re reminding everyone about our recycling banks across the borough that anyone can use.

Our new recycling service has proved a huge hit with 8 out of 10 residents* using it. We’re always looking for ways to encourage people to recycle more so we’re reminding everyone about our recycling banks across the borough that anyone can use.

So if you don’t yet have our recycling service at home, have more recycling than you were expecting or have items you don’t want but that we don’t collect, for example, textiles and books, then pop along to one of our recycling banks.

Locations of recycling banks

We also need to let everyone know that from April the number of these recycling banks is being cut down to 25 as traffic to some has fallen considerably since the new home collection service launched.

We will be updating our list of recycling bank locations once the under-used sites have been closed.

Thank you for rethinking your rubbish and recycling more.
