No plastic carrier bags, thank you

No plastic bags graphic

From 9 November we won’t be accepting plastic carrier bags in your mixed recycling. This comes hot on the heels of government changes requiring larger shops to charge 5p for all single-use carrier bags - a move designed to reduce the use of plastic bags and the litter they cause.

From 9 November 2015 we won’t be accepting plastic carrier bags in your mixed recycling. This comes hot on the heels of government changes requiring larger shops to charge 5p for all single-use carrier bags – a move designed to reduce the use of plastic bags and the litter they cause.

So if you have plastic bags you’re about to throw away, please consider:

• re-using them on your next shopping trip

• using them as waste bin liners / sacks

• using them to contain pet waste

• recycling them on your next trip to the supermarket (most supermarkets have a carrier bag recycling point in-store)

As a last resort, place them in your green refuse bin. Please use re-useable carrier bags whenever possible.

What can I recycle?

Look out for stickers and bin hangers on your mixed recycling bin in the next few weeks. These will remind you that we don’t want plastic bags in the recycling in the future and will also remind you about all the things you can recycle.

Don’t forget – you can also check all the things you can recycle, including plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, on our website.

With the clocks going back and temperatures dipping, winter is on its way. So now’s the time to start preparing for winter and making sure you keep warm, keep well and are prepared and safe. Simply follow our three-step plan.

Step 1 - Keep Warm

  • Heat your home to at least 18oC.
  • Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors.
  • Insulate your loft, hot water cylinder and pipes.
  • Draw your curtains and shut doors to help keep the heat in.
  • Get your boiler checked and serviced annually.
  • Wrap up warm; wear layers and a hat.
  • Find out about financial help that might be available - speak to your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
  • Contact Action Surrey for up-to-date grant information. Call them on 0800 783 2503 or visit the Action Surrey website.
  • Read our article, Is your home due an MOT? for more ways Action Surrey can help.

Step 2 - Keep Well

  • Have plenty of hot food and drinks and eat at least five portions of fruit and veg every day.
  • Catch germs in a tissue and wash your hands.
  • Stock up on tinned and frozen foods.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Have your flu jab – if you’re over 65 it’s free!
  • Keep active indoors and out. Visit your local leisure centre or enjoy some of our great parks and countryside areas.
  • Get help early; ask your pharmacist for advice if you’re not feeling well or for a non-emergency, call 111.

Step 3 - Be Prepared and Safe

  • Keep your medicine cabinet stocked and arrange repeat prescriptions in good time.
  • Stay up-to-date with weather reports from the Met Office or listen to BBC Surrey (104.6FM)
  • Sign up for flood warnings on the government's flood warning webpage and consider making a flood plan if your home is at risk.
  • Look out for your neighbours.
  • For vulnerable residents – join your utility provider’s Priority Service Register.
  • For those with mobility or sight problems, or if you use a dialysis machine at home, join Thames Water’s Special Assistance Register.
  • Call Surrey Fire and Rescue for a free Home Fire Safety visit on 0800 085 0767 or via Surrey County Council's website

Is your home due an MOT?

You may consider having an MOT for your car or even for yourself – but have you considered undertaking a winter MOT for your home? This is a good time of year to make sure your home is ready for winter.

You may consider having an MOT for your car or even for yourself – but have you considered undertaking a winter MOT for your home? This is a good time of year to make sure your home is ready for winter.

Check whether you need any of the following to keep your home warm this winter. Action Surrey can advise you about available grants, low interest loans and free no-obligation quotes.

Loft Insulation: a quarter of heat is lost through the roof. Insulating your loft is a simple and effective way to reduce heat loss and reduce your heating bills. Up to 100% funded grants are available through Action Surrey.

Cavity wall and solid wall insulation: around a third of all the heat lost in an uninsulated home escapes through the walls. In winter, the colder it is outside, the faster heat from your home will escape into the surrounding air. Action Surrey can obtain funding for you whether you have a solid walled property or one with cavity walls.

A boiler service or replacement boiler: Action Surrey can provide a competitive boiler service and free no obligation quotes for replacement boilers. Funding is available for those on income related benefits.

Visit the Action Surrey websitecontact them by email or phone on 0800 783 2503. Funding and grants are subject to availability or survey.

For more ideas on keeping warm this winter, read our item on Stay well this winter.
