Surrey Abuse Awareness Week will include New Shoes Theatre’s acclaimed production of Hurried Steps at the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill, for one night only on October 6th.
The play is inspired by real testimonies from Amnesty International and performed by members of the Hurried Steps ensemble which includes actors from Downton Abbey, Eastenders, The Archers and the award winning Berberian Sound Studio.
This hard-hitting production has been seen in many different venues across the UK and is suitable for people aged 15 upwards. It highlights the issue of violence against women and girls which can affect people from all walks of life in different ways.
The tickets are all fully subsidised so there is no cost for anyone that wants to come along and there will be a voluntary collection for the East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services at the end of the evening.
The short, stark, no-frills presentation is performed in association with the East Surrey Community Safety Partnership and is a powerful stimulant for a Q&A between the audience and a panel of local fieldworkers and domestic violence experts who provide support for families in the Surrey area. There will be a display and information about the services.
Hurried Steps was written by the internationally renowned prize winning Italian playwright, Dacia Maraini, who is also a best-selling novelist. She is a Nobel Prize for Literature nominee and was shortlisted for the International Man Booker Prize.
The director, Nicolette Kay was invited to give a TEDx Talk called Hidden Stories Hurried Steps about the production. She has directed many successful plays including Mary Stuart at Battersea Arts Centre “Nicolette Kay directs the often exhilarating proceedings…a production of character” The Guardian; and Love Child by Joanna Murray-Smith at the Finborough Theatre “Two fine performances in Nicolette Kay's gripping but measured production." The Gatwick Airport Community Trust, Esdas, The East Surrey Community Safety Partnership and Surrey Against Domestic Abuse support this presentation at The Harlequin Theatre.
