The Council’s Planning Policy team is currently in the process of preparing evidence for a new Local Plan which will plan for the development needs (housing, employment, retail, open space etc.) of the borough over the time period of 2019 to 2039.

WS Planning, Reigate leads the way with new apprentice

Max Rayner joined the Practice in September 2018 as one of only 6 people in the UK undergoing the new Architectural Assistant Apprenticeship. Max will be working them us 80% of the week and for the remainder he will be studying at London South Bank University and undertaking other “off the job” training. Max’s family background involves the building industry, and this ignited his interest in building design and architecture as a profession. Max feels his strengths are in learning on the job and the new Apprenticeship route seemed ideal.

WS Planning & Architecture were delighted to be approached by such a proactive and mature school leaver and were keen to provide the opportunity for Max to unlock his potential, following this innovative new pathway and pursue his career aspirations by offering him an Apprenticeship. This is a minimum of a four-year commitment between WS Planning & Architecture, Max, and London South Bank University.

Max attended The Beacon School, Banstead and went on to Reigate College to study A Level Maths, Geography, Photography and B-TEC Applied Science. He brings youthful enthusiasm to the Practice and has already shown an ability to learn quickly. Max will be working mainly on Stages 2 to 3 of our Four Stage Planning & Design Process, undertaking Measured Surveys, and producing Concept Designs and Developed Designs in 2D and 3D.

The Practice are planning to set up an Architectural Apprentice Placement on a yearly basis. Please contact Lee Barker if you have any aspiring architects looking for a unique pathway to becoming an Architect.

Professor Lilly Kudic, Head of Architecture, School of The Built Environment and Architecture at London South Bank University said: “We're delighted that WS Planning & Architecture are supporting the architectural assistant apprenticeship so positively, and very pleased to warmly welcome Max Rayner to London South Bank University as part of the first cohort of undergraduate apprentices in the UK. Both WS and Max have taken genuine initiative in participating in this exciting venture to bring practices and schools of architecture closer together and enable those wanting to study architecture to benefit from workplace-based learning - and freedom from the debt which inhibits many students from entering programmes in architecture. We feel confident the partnership between Max, his practice, and LSBU will provide a great combination to develop his learning and wish Max every success with his professional career.”
