Keep busy this half term

Worried your children will complain of boredom this half term? Look no further than our leisure centres and parks.
Try something new, whatever the weather

Our sports taster sessions are ideal opportunities for children to try something new and keep busy for a few hours. And since they are indoor activities, you won’t need to worry about the weather.

Among others are tasters in judo (for age seven to nine year olds) plus trampolining especially for older children (11-15 year olds). Both cost just £6 per child and are open to children throughout the borough.

Also coming soon is a brand new, free introductory street dance course for 11-19 year olds. The course takes place on Thursdays from 6 November from 4.30-5.30pm at Donyngs Leisure Centre, Redhill.

Find out more and download a booking forms for all these activities on the Youth Activities page on our website

Halloween fun

What better way to celebrate this spooky season than with some ghoulish goings on at Priory Park. Bring your children to join us for a mini-beast hunt and some Halloween fun between 2.45pm and 4pm on Friday 31 October in Priory Park, Bell Street, Reigate. The event is free but parents will need to stay with their children.

If you have not yet paid the newly re-opened Memorial Park in Redhill a visit, this half term is a great time to do so. A range of fabulous play equipment, sports courts, café selling freshly made pizzas and crepes plus a green open space in the heart of Redhill are all waiting for your children and their friends while you enjoy a sit down and enjoy a coffee. To celebrate the re-opening a Fun and Fitness Festival is being held in the park on Saturday 1 November from 11am-3pm. For event details see the Memorial Park Fun and Fitness Festival page on our website.

Supporting small businesses

Small Business Saturday logo

To recognise the vital role small businesses play in the borough’s economy, we will be supporting Small Business Saturday on 6 December 2014. Find out how you can get involved and about our other initiatives to support small businesses.

Nine out of ten businesses  in the borough have fewer than nine employees. To recognise the vital role these organisations play in our local economy, we will be supporting Small Business Saturday on 6 December 2014.

The initiative aims to support, inspire and promote small businesses on the day, and beyond. If you run a business and would like to get involved, or would just like to support your local businesses, find out how on the Small Business Saturday website or follow @SmallBizSatUK on Twitter.

Business Support Grants

Since April, we have awarded £12,790 to small and businesses and new businesses starting-up to help them develop and grow. Our Business Support Grants of up to £1,000 provide funding for:
  • new or improved equipment such as machinery, tools or IT
  • property improvements
  • training and support for business growth.

Accounting4contractors Ltd received grant funding last year. Natasha Baker from the company, said: "The website we've created with this funding has given us the ability to adapt and change our content really easily (without being real techies) so we can make the most of any new marketing ideas, for example around being selected as finalists for SmallBizSat100."

The grants have also helped local job seekers to fund new business ventures so they can move from unemployment to self-employment.

Learn and lunch

Our monthly programme of Learning Lunches, run in partnership with ‘Let's Do Business’, is an opportunity to hear informative presentations on a range of business topics. Up-coming events are ‘Alternative methods of staff recruitment’ on 12 November and ‘Measuring customer satisfaction’ on 10 December. Other popular subjects include: social media skills, website optimisation, presentation skills and converting visitors to customers. They also give you the chance to network with other like-minded business people.

For details of up-coming events and to find out about these and our other small business support initiatives visit our website or follow us on Twitter for updates.

Ready, steady…pedal to school!

Children walking with their bikes to school
Keeping children active once the nights draw in and the weather turns cold can be a challenge, but Sustrans and Surrey County Council could have the answer.
Cycling project for schools

Schools across Reigate & Banstead are taking part in a Sustrans project, which aims to embed a culture of safe cycling to school through fun events and activities, better storage facilities and community engagement.  Sustrans is the sustainable transport charity. The project encourages children to choose their bikes or scooters rather than their family cars for the school journey.

Hope Dickie, a pupil at Woodmansterne Primary, one of the schools taking part in the project, said “I enjoyed the after school club which Hannah [the Sustrans officer] did with us because it taught me important bike skills.” To find out how your child’s school can take part in the Sustrans project, contact the Bike It officer Hannah Mann, at hannah.mann@sustrans.org.uk

Cycle training for families

This winter, schools will be focussing on cycle safety, with ‘be bright be seen’ mufti days, Bikeability cycle training and activities during road safety week. Cycle training is available for families at half price from Surrey County Council. Email debbie.reid@surreycc.gov.uk or visit the Travel SMART website to find out more.

Consultations
What do you think of our 5 year plan?

The word 'feedback' in a magnifying glass
Would you like to share your views on the council’s priorities to make sure we meet the needs and aspirations of you and other residents. We've got a super-quick survey so you can do just that.
Our 5 year plan

Did you know we have a 5 year plan, called our Corporate Plan, that explains how we will deliver services to people living and working in our borough?

We’ve developed it after consulting with residents, businesses, voluntary organisations and lots of others who help make Reigate & Banstead a great place to live and work. We’re after feedback on the latest draft, ahead of it being formally being published early in 2015. So if you can spare five minutes please take part in our short survey to let us know if we’re on the right track.

Our 5 year plan explains what we want to achieve and the challenges we face, including financial ones. The priority areas are:

People – supporting residents to enjoy healthy and happy lifestyles

This involves:

• supporting people into employment, particularly vulnerable families and young people
• working with other organisations to provide great services for older people so that they can stay independent
• encouraging everyone to have healthy lifestyles, and to make use of our leisure centres and parks
• improving safety, working with the police and others.

Places – a great place to live and work

These planned activities include:

• encouraging existing businesses to thrive and grow and attracting new businesses into the area
• making sure our towns and public spaces are attractive for all
• delivering affordable and other housing, employment space and infrastructure, while protecting the borough’s pleasant environment.

The council

We will be working to:

• be financially self-sufficient by 2020
• engage with residents and businesses to help improve the services we offer
• increase the income from, and value of, our property and assets
• create a forward thinking, innovative and entrepreneurial organisation.

Visit  'Our 5 year plan' on our website for more information and to take part in the survey.
It closes on 17 November so please get online and give us your views.
