Democracy from your armchair
A brand new addition to our website, webcasting, means that residents can now watch local decision-making as it happens without having to leave their homes.
It’s now easier than ever to keep abreast of local decision-making with new webcasting technology on our website. Webcasting is how we broadcast council meetings through the internet. Reigate & Banstead’s full Council, Executive and Planning meetings are now filmed and broadcast live via our website, enabling you to watch debate as it happens, hear discussion from your local councillors and see decisions being made. Recordings are then stored on our website so that they can also be watched at a later date. Search for issues that affect you
You can also use search facilities in the webcasting software to, for instance, find out when issues related to your neighbourhood or town centre are being discussed. Similarly, if you have particular interests, you can search by key words such as ‘car parks’, ‘sports facilities’, ‘finance’ and so on, enabling you to keep up to date on local issues. Webcasting of our meetings was launched on 12 February with the meeting of the full Council, and progressively our library of webcast meetings available to watch will increase over time. You do not have to watch entire meetings just to see the part that matters to you. Once a meeting has been recorded, you can use the links in the webcast to jump to different agenda items or to different speakers. Turn pizza into power
Did you know that by using your food waste caddy for unwanted cooked and uncooked food, you can help generate power?
Did you know that by using your food waste caddy for unwanted cooked and uncooked food, you can help generate power?
Our weekly food waste collection service takes your food waste to an anaerobic digester. Here the food is broken down to produce biogas; this is used to generate electricity. The process also creates biofertiliser, used in farming to help crops grow.
So next time you have food left over, don’t stick it in with your rubbish – use your food waste caddy and help create some power.
What can I recycle?
We can collect any type of cooked or uncooked food – from eggshells to tea bags, fish bones to old cake. Our Food waste bin webpage has a reminder of all sorts of food you can put in your caddy. Use your small silver caddy to collect food in your kitchen and then transfer the contents to your larger green outdoor food caddy for collection, on your usual collection day.
Lining your kitchen caddy
You can line your caddy with newspaper or compostable liners which you can buy – don’t forget to check for the compostable logo. It’s an idea to wash both your food caddies from time to time to help keep smells at bay and keep them clean.
Live in a flat?
We’re in the process of rolling out our recycling service to homes that don’t currently have it, where it’s practically possible. If you live in a flat we will write to you ahead of introducing the service to your property.

Tackling the issues that concern you
Reigate & Banstead Joint Enforcement Team (JET) is made up of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council officers with enforcement powers and Surrey Police officers. The team, which launched last June, was set up to take a more visible, robust approach to the antisocial behaviour issues that concern you and your community, including: - inconsiderate parking
- noisy neighbours
- fly-tipping
- graffiti
- abandoned vehicles
- littering and dog fouling
- cycling offences
- problems with licensed premises and licensed vehicles and their drivers.
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, come along to your nearest event and talk to the JET to find out more about the team and how they can help. A better, safer borough We live in one of the safest counties in England but we know that the inconsiderate behaviour by a minority can be a concern to residents. By working even more closely with Surrey Police and sharing some powers, the JET has enabled us to prevent and deal with a wider range of issues more effectively when they arise, making the borough an even better, safer place to live and work. Register online
The way we register to vote changed last year. Now every individual is responsible for registering themselves. It’s quick and easy to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. It only takes a few minutes. You will need your National Insurance number, which you can find on your payslip or any document from the Department for Work and Pensions or HM Revenue & Customs.
Look out for your letter We’ve recently written to all households in the borough with details of who is on the electoral register at the property. Anyone eligible to vote and living at the address, but whose name is not on the letter, should register to vote as soon as possible at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to be able to vote on polling day. Young people, students and people who move frequently are much less likely to be registered. So, if you’ve moved recently or are a first-time voter, don’t forget to register yourself, or you could lose your vote. You can even register if you’re aged 16 or 17, ready for when you become eligible to vote at 18. Please help us to spread this message among family and friends who may not have registered yet. Did you know that registering also helps to keep your credit reference up to date? Apply for a postal or proxy vote If you’re unable to get to a polling station on election day you can apply for a postal vote (by 21 April) or proxy vote (by 28 April) on our Voting and elections page of our website. If you are looking for a new challenge to make use of your interest in local democracy and your head for figures, joining the Council’s panel for councillors’ expenses could be just the role for you. The Independent Remuneration Panel advises the Council on the level and type of expenses paid to its elected representatives. Comprising of three individuals, it currently has one vacancy for a period of three years.
Skills and expertise
We’re looking for someone with experience of public life who has the ability to command respect within the Council and inspire confidence among residents. Candidates should also be able to understand comparative and financial data and, ideally, have an understanding of decision making structures in local government or the public sector. If you fit this profile and can commit to taking part in approximately four meetings per year (usually around October to November), please consider applying.
How to apply Members of the panel are paid a modest remuneration in recognition of their contribution, and expenses incurred in attending meetings are reimbursed. Panellists must have no connection with the Council or be members of any political party. Proposed licensing for landlords
Proposals from Croydon Council to introduce a licensing scheme for landlords could have an impact on neighbouring boroughs like Reigate & Banstead.
Croydon Council is consulting on its proposals for a landlords licensing scheme. Under the proposed scheme, landlords would need a licence for each of the properties they let in the borough of Croydon.
Croydon Council is keen to give residents and businesses in Reigate & Banstead the opportunity to take part in the consultation because if Croydon was to go with its preferred option and introduce a borough-wide scheme, it may cause a displacement of problems to neighbouring boroughs such as ours.
