Reigate & Banstead Business Champions
Week 3 & 4

In this week’s #ReigateBansteadBusinessChampion campaign, we are shining a light on the resilience, determination and creativity demonstrated by the independent businesses in our borough – as well as their support for the local community.

Many of our businesses are busy working behind the scenes on their strategy for when lockdown eases.  Others have had to completely re-think their business model in order to survive and to keep serving the communities that rely on them.

This week’s champions are:

Inside Out Health in Reigate - an independent health food shop that has been pulling out all the stops to develop their home delivery service and can now offer free delivery to most of the borough, providing wholefoods, nutritional supplements, natural skin care products and advice.

The Garibaldi Community Pub in Redhill, which has transformed itself, first into a community off licence and now a pop-up grocery store to help meet local community need.  They have also partnered with #MyRound for customers to donate a drink to #NHSHeroes when they reopen.

The Epsom Bakehouse in the north of the borough has ‘proved’ (forgive the pun) that anything is possible by taking their bread-making courses online in addition to creating free live weekly bake-along sessions and a vibrant online community for home bakers.

Winterbotham Darby in Merstham Redhill has been making generous weekly food donations to the @mersthammix community hot meal service as well as @reigatebanstead Community Support Centre.

We want to say thank you to all our local businesses going the extra mile:

Churchills Professional Dry Cleaners in Reigate, who are providing free uniform cleaning to NHS and frontline workers as well as free cleaning of bedding for the elderly, and clothing for the homeless supported by Renewed Hope Trust.

Tammy at Tam’s Cakes & Cookies in Banstead has been busy baking her delicious cupcakes and brownies. She's also raised more than £500, enabling her to deliver a steady supply of sweet treats to Surrey’s deserving NHS staff.

In response to the national PPE shortage, Knights Haberdashery mobilised a team of volunteers to sew scrubs and drawstring bags for the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Wallhouse GP Surgery, raising almost £1,800 in donations for the project.

Although located just outside the borough, The Pilot’s Hub at Redhill Aerodrome has been busy keeping our borough’s residents stocked with fresh fruit and veg boxes. Working with Surrey County Council, they have also supplied food for vulnerable people across the county and have provided nearly 2 tonnes of food for NHS staff and emergency services.

The Skills Toolkit
Free courses on new online platform

Free courses are available through a new online platform hosted on the gov.uk website, called The Skills Toolkit. The new platform gives people access to free, high-quality digital and numeracy courses to help build up their skills, progress in work and boost their job prospects.

These are the skills which are highly valued by employers and sought after in a wide range of jobs. With more people expected to be working and studying remotely in the coming months, the platform offers a great opportunity to learn new skills to help to get ahead online and gain the knowledge we’ll all need for the future. The platform also offers employees who have been furloughed an opportunity to keep up their skills development while they are at home.

Courses on offer cover a range of levels, from everyday maths and tools for using email and social media more effectively at work to more advanced training. Individuals will be able to access courses helping them to create great online content developed by the University of Leeds and the Institute of Coding, to understand the Fundamentals of Digital Marketing from Google Digital Garage and to learn how to code for data analysis from the Open University. All courses are online and flexible, so people can work through them at their own pace.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

I know how difficult the recent months have been and the huge changes the coronavirus has brought on the daily lives of us all.

The high-quality and free to access courses on offer on our new online learning platform, The Skills Toolkit, will help those whose jobs have been affected by the outbreak, and people looking to boost their skills while they are staying at home, protecting the NHS and saving lives.

I want businesses to encourage their furloughed employees to use The Skills Toolkit to improve their knowledge, build their confidence and support their mental health so they have skills they need to succeed after the coronavirus outbreak.
