Two new grants have just been launched to grow businesses in Reigate and Banstead and beyond. The grants are always very popular and the fund is limited so don't miss out.

Coast to Capital Region - Small grants

This is a capital grant of between £5,000 and £20,000 for businesses looking to create new jobs. Coast to Capital are inviting start-ups, existing businesses and social enterprises that are looking to grow and create new jobs to apply for a small grant. Grants of between £5,000 and £20,000 are available to eligible businesses. Because the Local Growth Fund is in the form of a capital grant, it may only be used to fund the acquisition, enhancement or creation of capital assets which have a useful life of at least 12 months. Only capital items are eligible for expenditure for this grant programme. For more details on the small grant go to the Coast to Capital website

Coast to Capital Region - Business growth grant

This is a capital grant of between £15,000 and £100,000 to support high growth businesses looking to create new jobs.

Coast to Capital are inviting expressions of interest from small and medium sized businesses that are looking to expand and create new jobs. Grants of between £15,000 and £100,000 will be available to eligible businesses. Because the Local Growth Fund is in the form of a capital grant, it may only be used to fund the acquisition, enhancement or creation of capital assets which have a useful life of at least 12 months. Only capital items are eligible for expenditure for this grant programme.

Applicants wishing to apply for activities related to research, development and innovation, for example software development, development of new products and prototype development and testing (this list is not exhaustive), should note that these types of projects are likely to involve substantial expenditure that is unable to be classed as capital expenditure and will need to be considered on a case by case basis to gain clarity and agreement on eligibility. Therefore applicants for this type of project should engage in discussions with the Growth Grants management team ASAP.

Investing in Merstham

Merstham proposed Iron Horse Site
Merstham proposed Iron Horse Site

The regeneration of Merstham is  a joint venture between the Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Raven Housing Trust and Surrey County Council will see new purpose built community facilities created alongside retail/food outlets. The facilities will include a library, a youth skills centre, training and meeting rooms available for community use and an IT drop in/café.

The regeneration project, a joint venture between Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Raven Housing Trust and Surrey County Council will see new purpose built community facilities created alongside retail/food outlets and new housing.

New shops and restaurants

In summer 2016, Morrisons will open a local store selling fresh produce on the former Iron Horse pub site. Day Lewis pharmacy, William Hill bookmakers and Goodrich dry cleaners, existing shops on Portland Drive, will then relocate into new retail units next to the store.

On the "Triangle site" opposite, a further four food outlets will also open for business in summer 2016. These will be an Indian take away and restaurant, a fish and chip shop and take away pizza outlet.  These leases have been granted for 20 years to existing Portland Drive businesses, after a competitive tender process.

New homes

Forty new homes are currently being built by Raven Housing Trust on the Purbeck Close site, just off Portland Drive. The homes will be a mixture of social rented and shared ownership units. The first of these homes have recently been occupied, with the final phase due for completion in Summer 2016.

A further ten new shared ownership flats will be built above the shops on the "Iron Horse" site. Work has recently started onsite, with completion scheduled for Spring 2016.

Once the new shops are open, the existing parade of shops (and flats above) on Portland Drive will be demolished. Outline planning permission is in place to build 48 new homes on this site. The proposed new homes will be a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom flats, and 2 and 3 bedroom houses, along with parking and some changes to the road layout in Portland Drive. The homes will be available for sale on the open market, subject to private development, from 2017 onwards.

New community facilities
Work on the construction of a new community building on the "Triangle site" has started. The building will include a library, youth centre, café, public computers, and a range of flexible community rooms - available for use by local organisations and services. The existing library will stay open until the new facilities are ready, in Summer 2016.
