Government decides on two unitary councils for Surrey in LGR

Naturally, we are disappointed with this outcome, having supported the option for three unitary councils, along with the majority of borough and district councils. However, now we have a decision on the way forward, we will work at pace with our neighbouring councils to ensure a smooth transition to the new East Surrey Council on 1 April 2027. In the meantime, council services will continue as usual throughout this process.

In addition, our Head of Paid Service, Mari Roberts-Wood has been confirmed as the Returning Officer for the East Surrey elections in 2026.

Member briefing

There is an all-Member LGR briefing on Monday 3 November at 6pm (which will be recorded) to discuss the changes in more detail.
