Evening Member Development Session: An Introduction to Spatial Development Strategies, 9 March 7pm

Members are invited to a joint evening Member Development Session, in conjunction with Planning team accross Surrey, on An Introduction to Spatial Development Strategies

Session overview:

The Planning and Infrastructure Act gained Royal Assent on 18th December 2025. Spatial Development Strategies (SDSs) are introduced through this legislation, with further information in the Government consultation ‘National Planning Policy Framework: proposed reforms and other changes to the planning system’. This session will cover the role and purpose of SDSs and some initial thinking around the programme and initial engagement for the SDS for Surrey. There is no requirement, but if attendees wish to review the relevant documents, the legislation is here Planning and Infrastructure Act 2025 and the NPPF draft is here National Planning Policy Framework: draft text for consultation.

The SDS will be a Surrey strategy, not a Surrey County Council one, albeit with the statutory requirement sitting with the county council in the first instance. It will need to be prepared collaboratively and therefore this session will be delivered jointly by Carolyn McKenzie (Surrey), Beverley Kutcher (Woking) and Kim Tagliarini (Elmbridge).
