Towns and villages will fall silent once again as communities hold Remembrance services to commemorate the lives of those who have fallen in conflicts around the world.

Armistice Day, now generally called Remembrance Day, will see millions of people stop what they are doing and observe a two-minute silence at 11am on Sunday November 11.

Royal British Legion branches, local councils, churches and community groups will be holding various ceremonies and services to pay their respects.

Tunsgate Quarter in Guildford has been given a giant poppy by the British Legion upon which people are invited to leave messages for fallen servicemen and women across all conflicts.

It is situated in the central atrium of the shopping centre and has already attracted many heartfelt messages.

In addition to this, the centre has been beautifully dressed with a selection of poppies and other foliage to mark the centenary.

  • FARNBOROUGH: The town launches its poppy appeal today at Princes Mead Shopping Centre at 10.30am.

Saturday October 27

  • CAMBERLEY: Camberley’s Park Street will launch its poppy appeal at 10am in Park Street. There will be entertainment and displays and at 11am the Royal British Legion exhortation will be given by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Dan Adams, followed by a 30-second silence. There will be a performance in The Atrium at 3pm by The Bombshells plus other dancers and performers.

Friday November 2

  • CAMBERLEY: Poppy Concert at Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green on November 2 at 7.30pm. This will include performances by the Surrey Police band, a drumming group and a choir. Tickets cost £8 and can be booked online at ticketsource.co.uk/event/EMGIKE or by calling 07876 688977.

  • GUILDFORD: Farnham Chamber Choir present In Flanders Fields at St Joseph’s Church at 7.30pm.   • LEATHERHEAD: A day celebrating 100 years since the end of WW1 kicks off at 10.30am with a marching band and opening ceremony hosted by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey. There will be entertainers performing old classics and new works as well as a Punch and Judy Show, Hero Trail competition and old style side stalls to entertain the whole family. Free event.   • ASHTEAD: A three hour bell-ringing challenge has been set at Ashtead’s historic St Giles’ church on Remembrance Sunday, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice with over 40,000 rings. Eight experienced bell ringers will attempt the task at 3pm. It is hoped the ringing will be heard across Ashtead village and will draw attention also to a special service of remembrance, which begins at 6pm. Address: St Giles Drove, KT21 1EN.

  • GODALMING: A parade will begin at Waverley Borough Council's car park at 9am and a service will take place at 9.45am in St Peter and St Paul Parish Church. This will be followed by a Remembrance Day ceremony at the War Memorial in the Phillips Memorial ground at 10.50am. After the service, the parade will go down the High Street, Great George Street, and The Burys and will return back to the council car park.
  • CHERTSEY: On marking 100 years since the end of the first world war, the team at Chertsey Museum has put together the borough roll of honour for the 817 who died and their names and details (where available) are running on the info screens in reception.   • COBHAM: A Remembrance Day Service takes place at St Andrew's Church at 10.45am and afterwards at the Royal British Legion in Hollyhedge Road for light refreshments from at 12pm. Address: St Andrew's Church, Downside Bridge Road, KT11 3EJ.
  • SEND: Parade from Send Recreation Ground to the Lancaster Hall in the presence of the mayor of Guildford at 2.30pm followed by a service at 3pm, wreath laying 3.30pm and Last Post at 3.45pm. Address: Send Road, GU23 7ET

  • WOKING: Singers from local choirs and choral groups will form into a combined choir for the singing of hymns and National Anthem. Uniformed units and organisations will march past the Mayor and Members of the Civic Procession in Church Street East. Everyone is invited to attend. The event will conclude with a Two Minute Silence and laying of wreaths. The event starts at 10.35am. Address: Jubilee Square, GU21 6GA.
  • ENGLEFIELD GREEN: RAF Remembrance Service at Englefield Green RAF Memorial from 10am-12pm. Address: Cooper's Hill Lane, TW20 0LB
  • EWELL: A chain of beacons will be lit at 7pm, a century after the guns fell silent. The beacons will symbolise the light of hope that emerged from the darkness of war. Address: Bourne Hall Gardens, Spring Street, KT17 1UF. Free event.
  • FARNHAM: A joint remembrance Sunday parade will begin at 10.30am in Castle Street, reaching Gostrey Meadow for a short service at 10.45am. At 11am all those attending will fall silent for two minutes before guests make their way to St Andrew’s Church for a remembrance service. Drivers are advised that temporary road closures will be in place from 10.15am to 11.30am. The roads affected include Castle Street, The Borough, Union Road, South Street, Downing Street, Longbridge and Victoria Road.
  • GUILDFORD: There will be a Lone Piper at Guildford Cathedral before a 10am Service of Remembrance. Beacons of Light will take place at 7pm and from 8pm-9.45pm there will be a Britten War Requiem at Guildford Cathedral. Address: Stag Hill, GU2 7UP.
  • LEATHERHEAD: This anniversary year the Remembrance Service will commence at 10.30am at the Leatherhead War Memorial. Address: North Street, KT22 7AW
  • REDHILL: A remembrance service takes place at 11am at the Bellfry Shopping Centre, Station Road, RH1 1ST. The civic remembrance service, attended by the Mayor, will take place at Shaw’s Corner War Memorial. The civic procession will leave Redhill United Reform Church at 10.45am. A short service will be held at the memorial, followed at 10.58am by two minutes silence and then the laying of wreaths. A church service follows.

  • REIGATE: There will be a Beacon Lighting at 6.45pm at Priory Park, Reigate RH2 7RL. The lit beacons symbolise the 'light of hope' that emerged from the darkness of war in commemoration and remembrance of the end of the conflict, the many millions who were killed or came home dreadfully wounded and those on the home front.

  • BANSTEAD: A parade, attended by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Julian Ellacott, will leave the Horseshoe at 10.30am and process towards the War Memorial. The service will be followed by two minutes silence at 10.58am and then wreath laying.
  • HORLEY: The remembrance parade will leave from Consort Way West at 10.35 and proceed to Vicarage Lane, where the parade will break off and walk to the War Memorial Gardens. A two minutes silence at 10.58 will be followed by wreath laying.
