NHS Health Checks – free in your workplace

YMCA East Surrey is working with Surrey County Council to encourage local businesses and organisations to provide help in improving staff health and wellbeing. They recognise that healthier workforces are an asset to the employer: healthy, active staff are shown to be better motivated and take less time off sick, therefore reducing business costs and improving efficiency. YMCA East Surrey has become the preferred provider of free NHS Health Checks across the area and has already provided services to a range of local enterprises.

Free NHS Health Checks for the over 40s are available for Surrey workplaces and are carried out by a trained health advisor who will come to your workplace.  Click heading for more...

YMCA East Surrey has become the preferred provider of free NHS Health Checks across the area and have already provided services to a range of local enterprises.

Free NHS Health Checks for the over 40s are available for Surrey workplaces, and are carried out by a trained health advisor who will come to your workplace. The check can tell your staff whether they’re at higher risk of certain health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke. An NHS Health Check also gives tailored advice on how to prevent these risk factors.

The check measures the following: cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index, and associated lifestyle factors such as physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking status.

Eligibility criteria is based on nationally recognised criteria to adopt a preventative approach:

  • Aged between 40 and 74
  • Live in Surrey or registered to a Surrey GP surgery
  • Not had an NHS Health Check in the previous five years
  • Not already been diagnosed with vascular disease or treated for certain risk factors such as:
    • High Cholesterol
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Diabetes
    • Angina
    • Heart Attack
    • Stroke
    • Kidney problems

All results are sent (by agreement with the staff member) to their GP.

YMCA East Surrey can also offer checks to those who do not meet the eligibility criteria for a cost (details available on request).

If you would like to take advantage of NHS Health Checks for your staff, one of YMCA's Health Advisors can come along to your offices to do the checks. The only requirements are the use of a private room, WiFi access and a pre-prepared schedule of eligible staff (30 minutes per staff member). Please get in touch with Emma Jones on 01737 779979 to find out more.

Could your company benefit from the Utilise Plus programme?
Providing support to SMEs to save energy

The Utilise Plus programme is funded by the European Regional Development Fund. Utilise Plus helps eligible small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) save energy, reducing their costs and greenhouse gas emissions in the process. Since starting the programme in late 2017, the programme has already helped SMEs make an estimated combined annual saving of 125 tonnes of CO2 by reducing their individual annual energy usage, on average, by 27%. It has achieved this by offering a variety of complimentary services, including:

  • Grant funding of between £1,000 to £5,000 to cover one-third of the cost of an energy saving project.
  • Energy Audits, fully funded by the ERDF, to identify energy and cost saving opportunities that SMEs can then act upon.
  • Energy Saving Workshops, outlining the business case for saving energy and helping participants create their own, unique action plans to tackle energy use in their organisations.
  • Business Networking Breakfasts, featuring expert speakers on a particular aspect of sustainability and connecting like-minded SMEs.

Sustainability Tours of interesting organisations that have implemented significant energy saving measures, to inspire.
