Proposal to remove permitted development rights to protect the borough’s centres
The Council is proposing to remove permitted development rights to convert ground floor commercial units to residential properties. Implementation of the planning proposal would prevent the automatic development of commercial premises like shops, restaurants, banks and launderettes to residential use. Instead, a full planning application would need to be made. Residents are invited to comment on the proposals until the consultation period closes on 13 May 2025.

Surrey Chambers quarterly business survey
The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) is the largest and longest-running business survey in the UK and is a powerful tool for representing the voice of business to Government. At the national level, it’s a leading indicator – often picking up big changes in the economy long before other surveys or official statistics:
• The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee uses the QES as one of its key benchmarks when setting interest rates.
• HM Treasury and the independent Office for Budget Responsibility use the QES to put together their forecasts for the UK’s economic performance.

Retail Crime Survey
Retail crime has a significant impact, not only on retail workers and business owners, but on entire communities.
Surrey’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Lisa Townsend, and Surrey Police’s Chief Constable, Tim De Meyer want to work with you to tackle your ongoing concerns, and ensure your voice is heard.
Retail crime is not ‘low-value’ offending. It can be extremely distressing, both for victims and witnesses.
As well as the economic, emotional and sometimes physical harm caused, this criminality can make those who live and work in Surrey feel less safe.
That’s why we are asking those directly impacted by retail crime to have their say. We want to better-understand the true scale of offending in Surrey, and your experiences with reporting crime to Surrey Police.
The survey closes at 9am on Monday, April 14.
